Attacks on Local Democracy

For years, state politicians have threatened the hard-earned gains people have made in their communities, overriding every protection or rule they don’t like with the heavy hand of state law. This session, lawmakers have filed dangerously broad legislation that will erode our ability to take care of our own communities.

Local officials understand the needs of their communities because they live in their communities. These are the folks we see at the grocery store and at Friday night football games. If state politicians take away their ability to address our day-to-day concerns, we won’t ever get our local problems fixed.

Neighborhoods have fought hard for local ordinances like those that protect quiet communities — the same protections the state is trying to undo.

When the state government fails to act, we depend on local towns and counties to do right by us.
