Stop the Attacks on Public Schools

Governor Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, and corporate private schools are aggressively peddling private school voucher schemes that divert taxpayer dollars to bankroll private schools for the wealthy. These kinds of scams have had many names before — tax credit scholarships, education savings accounts — but they’re just private schools vouchers. Texans have stopped these scams before: In the 2023 legislative session, every attempt at passing vouchers was voted down in the House by a bipartisan coalition. With a special session now on the horizon, we’re prepared to do it again.

In many parts of Texas, public schools are the biggest employers in town. Private school vouchers will only line the pockets of corporations while teachers face layoffs.

We need to show we value our kids by giving them the best education possible. That means more teachers in the classroom, more support staff to keep kids concentrated on learning, and better pay to retain talented educators.

Diverting millions of taxpayer dollars away from our schools to fund private education means larger class sizes, lower teacher pay, and worse outcomes for the 96% of Texas children who attend Texas public schools.

Taxpayer dollars can’t be trusted with private corporations. Private schools aren’t accountable to taxpayers, aren’t subject to testing, and can pick and choose their students.

By the numbers:

  • 84% of Texans support reducing class sizes and increasing teacher pay

  • 61% of Texans oppose sending their tax payer dollars to pay for the students’ private school education

  • 62% of Texans believe there is too little funding going to public schools, and 72% say there is too little funding going to teacher pay
